Behind the Score: Ryan Moore on Revolutionary America
As a composer, some projects invite you into a world. Others invite you into a moment in history. Revolutionary America was very much the latter.

Revolutionary America was very much the latter.
Produced by Hillsdale College and narrated by Tom Selleck, Revolutionary America explores the ideas, people, and events that shaped the founding of the United States. The feature-length documentary received a nationwide theatrical release through Fathom Entertainment, bringing this story to audiences across the country.
I knew the music needed to do more than simply accompany historical imagery. The score had to help audiences connect emotionally with a story they may think they already know. Behind every historical event are real people, difficult decisions, sacrifices, victories, and moments of uncertainty.
My goal was to create a musical language that felt distinctly American while remaining cinematic and emotionally grounded. One of the challenges of scoring a documentary like Revolutionary America is finding the balance between education and emotion. The music must support the narrative without overwhelming it, while still helping audiences feel the weight and significance of the events unfolding on screen. Some moments called for restraint and reflection; others required a broader sense of scale, momentum, and hope.
While writing this score, I kept reflecting on what America means to me personally. Growing up in Virginia, my life has been shaped by the beauty, history, and spirit of this land. Even though I was writing music for the story of the birth of a nation, I realized I was really writing about something even more universal: hardship, adventure, love, nostalgia, sacrifice, trial, and wonder.
To tell another American story honestly, I had to draw from my own.
I thought about my childhood in Virginia — playing cowboys in my grandparents’ yard, watching westerns and classic films with my grandfather, dreaming about adventure. I thought about marriage, fatherhood, the responsibility to provide, the struggle to build something meaningful, and the desire to leave a better country for my children than the one I first inherited.
I thought about the simple things too: the wonder of the American landscape, the excitement of possibility, and the feeling that life itself is an adventure worth fighting for.
Seeing the project reach theaters nationwide has been incredibly rewarding. It's always gratifying to watch a project move from countless hours in the studio to audiences experiencing the finished work together.
I'm deeply grateful to the filmmakers, producers, and creative team who entrusted me with telling this story through music. Projects like this are a reminder of why I became a composer in the first place: To bring stories to life by inspiring wonder and adventure and helping preserve the magic of film for the next generation.
